A Message From Our Founder, Sheritta Grier
A Message From Our Founder, Sheritta Grier
“Keeping them and teaching them is our responsibility! As a native of Baltimore City, I know the need for mentorship is at its highest today. Fortunately, I am a product of two young people who grew up in Baltimore City and faced some of the cruelest hardships that inner city life can bring.
I say “fortunately” because I believe the life I have experienced thus far was for somebody. I am a living witness for some young person who may be suffering, scared, pregnant, judged, struggling, confused, or abused right now.
Drugs and alcohol claimed my parents’ lives at a very young age and forced me to be raised (i.e., taken care of) by my grandmother. In this short lifetime, I have been a victim of domestic violence, sexual abuse, neglect, teen pregnancy, displacement…the list goes on and on.
Although my grandmother and mother were in my life, I believe they were so busy with adulthood that they forgot about some of the important things I may have needed to survive. As I grew older and learned from mentors and self-teaching, I realized that there were things I needed to know as a young person.
Sometimes, even the best of parents may forget little steps that young people may need. When living or surviving, some steps come so naturally to adults. God woke me up out of my sleep one night in October and told me that I needed to help others on a broader scale. By sharing my experiences, I show youth that even with all the odds against me, I was able to get past them and grow into a productive woman.
My Destined Beautiflies and Gentlemen group mentoring program is not just a thought or dream; it is a resource for someone who needs to know not from a textbook or a made-up story but a true testimony that we are our own destiny. We all can be “Pretty to see, but hard to catch.” We all can be “Making our next move a power move.”
So I invite you to come join me. Whether you are mentor or mentee, you will be welcomed as a Destined B.E.A.U.T.I.F.L.Y or G.E.N.T.L.E.M.E.N!”
